When To Outsource Hauling

Knowing how and when to outsource your hauling needs can give you an edge over the competition. Sometimes it's a heavy load, others a long distance; working with a professional hauling company can really expedite the completion your construction project.

Trying to decide between hauling away trash and debris on your own or outsourcing it to a dump truck hauling company? There are some instances when it makes sense to haul the debris away yourself using a small truck or trailer. However, there are other times when it’s best to let a professional dump truck company haul away debris. Take a look at some of the instances when it’s better to outsource.

When You Need to Haul a Heavy Load

Contractors can transport virtually anything using pickup trucks and trailers as long as the total weight of the load does not exceed 10,000 pounds. However, when loads over this weight need to be hauled, hauling with a pickup truck or trailer is not advised because of the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (CGVWR) of the truck trailer and equipment. The CGVWR is the maximum total combined weight of the vehicle, including passengers, cargo, fuel, and all other items. In those instances, it’s best to outsource the job to a dump truck company. Even if you have the equipment needed to haul over 10,000 pounds, professional dump truck companies have the special licensing and equipment to do it safely.

When You Don’t Have the Necessary Equipment

Heavy hauling equipment is needed to transport loads over 10,000 pounds. Because of the nature of heavy hauling tractors, rental fleets typically do not include the necessary equipment. Outsourcing is usually the only option for smaller construction companies because they don’t have special heavy hauling equipment. Even for large construction companies with the necessary hauling equipment, outsourcing may still be a better option.

When You Don’t Have Drivers

Hauling loads over 26,000 pounds requires drivers with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and a medical clearance certificate. In addition to having drivers with a CDL and a medical clearance certificate, their employing company must enroll in a drug and alcohol testing program and meet overall DOT recordkeeping responsibilities. That means if your construction company does not have qualified drivers and is not DOT compliant, they are not allowed to haul loads exceeding 26,000 pounds and will need to outsource.

When the Load Needs to Be Transported a Long Distance

When a load needs to be hauled over long distances it can make sense to outsource. Large construction companies can benefit from outsourcing since hauling over long distances takes time and requires knowledge of the different state regulations. Every state and jurisdiction has its own rules for transporting various items. Regulations can range from differing ideas about size load classifications, rules about when front and back escorts are required, and materials that are allowed in a landfill. When you outsource, the dump truck company you hire will know all the rules and regulations needed to haul loads legally.
